Here in the Philippines, anyone who has ever tried applying for a job, ventured on a business prospect, or gone through the tedious process of immigration was met with the obstacle of getting an NBI clearance. Without this golden piece of government-issued document, it would be impossible to get all these errands done. The NBI application itself is an arduous process, so read further to know what it is and for what other purposes it serves.

What is an NBI clearance?

NBI stands for the National Bureau of Investigation, and it is the local counterpart of the United States’ FBI. An NBI clearance is an official assurance that you are a citizen in good standing and does not have criminal records in the Philippines.

The NBI clearance contains your name, address, place of birth, date of birth, date of issuance, and purpose for requesting it. It has a validity period of only one year from the date of issuance, so chances are you will have to apply for it multiple times in your lifetime.

An NBI clearance is also a multi-purpose ID that bears the statement “Issued for whatever legal purpose,” which means you no longer have to specify the purpose of using the NBI clearance.

The NBI clearance application used to take hours of waiting at the queue in their satellite offices. Since the introduction of the NBI online application system in 2015 however, people can now book appointments – making the process much more convenient. NBI has since then stopped accepting walk-in registrations.
