For those of you who have long been fans of Korean drama, you probably were the first bunch to be introduced to the most popular Korean dishes, like samgyupsal. You can often see people eating it during dinner gatherings with family, friends, or colleagues. Samgyupsal’s popularity leveraged from its exposure on television, and its popularity among Filipinos have certainly picked up over the years.

Now, you can see a lot of restaurants in the metropolis serving Korean food and specialize mainly on serving samgyupsal. 

What is samgyupsal and how is it served? 

specializing in meat dishes. The word samgyeop-sal, meaning “pork belly”, often refers to samgyeop-sal-gui (grilled pork belly). It consists of thick pork strips with no marinating involved.  

Translated from Korean, samgyeop-sal means “three layer flesh”: “sam” means “three”, “gyeop” means “layer” and “sal” means “meat”. Samgyupsal refers to striations of lean meat and fat in the pork belly that appear as three layers when cut.

To eat samgyupsal, you cook slices of fatty pork belly meat on a grill at the table. It is usually served with lettuce or other leafy vegetables which you use to wrap a slice of grilled samgyupsal. You may grill other ingredients like pa muchim, mushroom, kimchi, garlic and onions at the same time. The meat is cut using scissors. Rice is usually paired with the meat which you can eat by dipping it in red pepper  or soybean paste, sesame oil, or soy sauce.

What is Samgyupsalamat?

Samgyupsalamat is a portmanteau, a combination of the words “samgyupsal” and “salamat” which means thank you in Filipino. They offer unlimited Korean barbecue, side dishes, rice and soup. Their meat selection includes 5 kinds of pork and 5 kinds of beef. Customers have the option to choose from Unlimited 1 with unlimited pork or Unlimited 2 with unlimited pork and beef. Both these options come with unlimited side dishes, rice, soup, and a pitcher of iced tea. To be able to dine here, there has to be at least two of you or you will have to pay the price of two people if you’re eating solo.

Samgyupsalamat opened its earliest branches way back in 2012, and samgyupsalamat BGC was one among the first. The restaurant currently has over 30 branches in Luzon, and they opened their first branches in Cebu last year on April.
